Longadu Massacre of 30 July 1988

On 19-20 February 2010; Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous people at Baghaichari leaving an indigenous man dead. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. The indigenous Buddhist man was gunned down by the Bangladesh army.

On 30 July 1988, Muslim settlers carried out a gruesome massacre at Bot Tola in Longadu, Rangamati district. The incident occurred when Mr. Rajani Kanta Chakma (a former member of Union Council or local government) and 8 other indigenous men, women and children were returning home from Mainee Mukh Bazar in Longadu, Rangamati district.

9 indigenous people were returning home in a boat skipped by a Muslim settler named Mohammad Khalil. The Muslim settler instead of taking them to their destination, took the victims to the Muslim settlement called Bot Tola situated on the west bank of Mainee river. As the boat reached the river bank, Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous passengers.

When the victims did not return home, their relations immediately reported to the Police Station at Longadu. Further, it was brought to the notice of the camp commander of the army camp at Korolya Chari in Longadu. But no necessary action was taken on the incident by Bangladesh army or administration.

On 3 August 1988, Bangladesh army arranged a meeting at the Tintilla Town Hall. Col. Imamuzzaman, Commander of 305 Brigade of Rangamati was the chief guest. The matter was brought before him. But Col. Imamuzzaman dismissed the complaint on the incident an remarked-

"So far many Muslims have been killed by the Shanti Bahini in different actions. But the government has not reacted to these incidents. But when a few indigenous people are killed, why there in so much of reaction"?

He said angrily, "In future, if a single Muslim is found missing or killed, then for each Muslim 15 indigenous people shall be shot dead by the army personnel".

Mr. Sukramani Chakma (29), son of late Akshay Chakma of Rangamati. The victim was serving as boatman of Forest Office at Korolya Chari, Longadu.
